General information.
These LED lamps are the replacement for the older halogen MR16 bulbs that were used for many decades in all kinds of track lighting and down lighting. Up until that point where LEDs became a suitable replacement, people often had to put up with short life halogen and something that created a lot of heat and energy waste. Halogen bulbs were not known for long life although some more extended life versions came out later. But with the advent of MR16 LED bulbs, all of that changed. It was now possible to not only get extremely long life, but also a significant energy saving that made a big difference in the electric bill if you are a residential or commercial user of this type of light. Most of the time these are operated on 12 volts although there are different voltages for specific applications.

The difference between halogen and LED.
The main difference between the LED and the halogen light is that the older halogen had a multifaceted reflector which projected the light in the proper direction from the incandescent filament. That kind of light control was necessary because of the nature of the light source itself. With MR16 lamps that are LED, there’s less need for that with some of these replacement lamps. It often uses a lens to focus the light, but there are a few that still have the multifaceted reflector with the integral LED that is embedded within the light bulb itself. This was most pervasively used with track lighting although there was lots of accent lighting, display lighting and landscape lighting that needed the optical control than an MR16 lamp could provide. The different beam spreads were available in all different types of wattages as well. You are finally starting to see those same availabilities in LED technology. You can get narrow flood beam angles and broader beam angles as well as different colors.

Saving money is always nice.
These are very energy-efficient, and that’s why a lot of people have converted from the old halogen to these LEDs. It makes complete sense because you can get a swift payback as a result while still maintaining the light levels that you enjoy today. If you need to know how much you can save by moving from a halogen to an LED, make sure to download our free spreadsheet which you’ll find in the left-hand column of our website. It’s a basic energy calculation that will tell you exactly how much money you’ll save by converting and that includes maintenance replacement costs as well. The paybacks are very fast with this, and it’s kind of a no-brainer for a lot of people. Now that the light levels and the accuracy of the LED light have matured, it makes it a perfect replacement for something like this.

The color of light can make a big difference.
Along with the energy savings which is important, color is also an essential aspect of replacing the old light bulbs you have now. Typically, the halogen was a warm white, incandescent color which many people liked but now there’s more selection and choice than ever. You can get everything from a cool white to daylight and of course the warm white color which we mentioned before. Color makes all the difference especially if you’re talking about retail lighting or home lighting. The way you light something colors what you’re doing in an interior space. You could paint the walls one color, but if the light is not what you like, then it will change the paint color as well. We want to make sure that the light that you use is going to make the interior space look the way you want it to. It’s an aesthetic choice, but it does make a big difference especially if you’re talking about something that is a retail lighting application. And for retailers, we have high color rendering MR16 LED bulbs that will give people a correct color for what they’re looking at purchasing. It makes all the difference, and sometimes it can result in more sales and an overall better presentation of your product.
