High Pressure Sodium Lamps - HPS
Some general information.
At, we want to supply you with the best quality high-pressure sodium lamps on the market today. These are all first quality lights and have a proven performance over time. High-pressure sodium is one of those light sources that is still used in many different types of security lighting today. It offers that golden white color that a lot of people like and they see it as a very warm color light. It’s much like sunset color lighting. For many decades it’s provided good energy efficiency and continues to do so today. And although there are other light sources like metal halide and LED that have replaced many of them, they’re still used today, and we have an ample supply of this type of light available to you. If you need to replace your existing HPS lamp, we probably have the exact one that you need, and in a quantity price you like. Although many people have made the switch to white lighting, sometimes this lighting is precisely part of the aesthetic appeal of certain types of buildings, street lights, and parking areas.

If you need to replace these today or the ones you need to be repaired, we have not only the lamps but also the ballast kits as well. Sometimes when people are troubleshooting this, try to find out what’s wrong with their high-pressure sodium lights, they can sometimes misunderstand how they work. When you see a high-pressure sodium bulb cycling on and off in a light fixture, it’s not because the ballast or the arc tube has been compromised, it’s because the lamp has gone completely bad and is demanding more voltage than the ballast can supply. It will start the lamp, and then the required voltage will get too high, and it will shut off again, causing this cycling of HPS lamps. It means you have to change your HPS sodium vapor light with a new light bulb. Now we just said sodium vapor, and sometimes people call it that or something like LPS lamps incorrectly. Keep in mind that it is high-pressure sodium. A lot of people had mercury vapor lights before, and sometimes that language is how they identify it whether it’s correct or not. This type of light is ideal for outdoor lighting for places like parking lots and street lighting because it’s not susceptible to cold or heat so much. Although heat would be more of an issue with something like this except that they are rarely run during the day. If you have a situation where the bulb will come on it all, you may need to change out the igniter or the entire ballast itself. The ballast kits we have will give you all the components you need to replace the existing worn-out ballast that you have. These are the two most essential components of the system which are the ballast and the lamp; the socket rarely goes out although on occasion you do need to replace that as well.

Energy saving possibilities.
If you’re thinking about going to a more energy-efficient LED system, we do have light fixtures that you can replace one for one of your existing HPS bulbs. You can do this either through a new light fixture or something like a corn light retrofit. These will work correctly in those type of situations the only thing you’ll probably need to do is bypass the existing ballast and directly wired to power. If you would like to know how much savings that you could get by retrofitting to LED, we do have an energy calculation spreadsheet which you can download for free on the left-hand column of our website. It’s a very simple spreadsheet that gives you an idea as to how much that you will save in real dollars on your electric bill and what kind of paybacks you will enjoy by doing this type of retrofit. The good news is that you cannot only save energy, but you can also replace HPS lights with something that has no more ballast or lamp that will cycle on and off. It will save you a lot in maintenance, and that’s one of the considerations that you can put into the spreadsheet and see how much you’ll save. For those of you who are sticking with the HPS type of light, will have these available for many years to come. There’s a very large installed base of this type of lighting, and the industry will continue to supply this for a long time people still like them because of their long life and all the different ways they can be used. We also have people that are using them as grow lights, and that’s something that we're also aware of, and we can help you with that with light fixtures and these bulbs that will give you help in getting a good start on spring growing.
