Some general information.
At BuyLightFixtures.com, we carry a very wide selection of fluorescent ballast for almost any type of lamp that you may have out there. We have them in magnetic and electronic versions that are going to replace just about anything that you’re trying to operate. Of course, the magnetic ballast is the older style and it’s not something that’s being made anymore, it’s strictly an electronic device now. It’s made to start the lamp and a momentary high voltage and that starts the lamp. Once the lamp is started, then it goes to a regulated constant voltage which is much lower. This is the difference between a transformer and a ballast. A transformer simply takes voltage from one level to another, a ballast starts out at a millisecond high voltage to start an arc, it’s a completely different technology.

Different types of fluorescent light ballasts.
Among various types of electronic fluorescent ballasts, there are instant start ballast and rapid start or programmed start ballasts. They all function a little bit differently. The instant start comes on as you would guess instantly. The programmed start as a softer start which although most people would see it as basically instant, it doesn’t come on quite as fast. Some people believed that the softer start version would help the fluorescent lamp life. But most of the ballast used today are the instant start variety and has become the most pervasive type of all of them. You’ll know which kind you have if you need to do a replacement, it ’s clearly labeled. In fact, the label tells you everything you need to know, how to wire the ballast, what the code number is, the ballast factor, full light output and all the different electrical aspects to it. If you ever need help identifying it, that code number on the label will be very helpful for us to help you.

PCB's in the old magnetics.
One of the things you want to keep in mind is that some of the older magnetic ballast if they are really old, may have PCBs in them. The way you’ll know whether they do or not is it will say on the label. On this type of device, if it has no PCBs in it, the label will say “NO PCB’s”. It was the only way they could label that when they removed PCBs from magnetics. It’s something to keep in mind because some of these older types of ballasts will leak on occasion and you need to make sure that you properly dispose of them as well. If yours have PCBs, dispose of them in an environmentally responsible manner. Your local town or city can direct you to people that recycle and destroy this kind of carcinogen properly.
