General information.
Circline fluorescent tubes are a unique kind of compact fluorescent and even predates some of the more modern versions of that lamp type. It is a circle of light with four prongs that make a connection to a socket that is usually in a wire harness. That wire harness usually comes directly from the ballast and conveniently connects to the prongs making a definite connection. Most of these run on a magnetic ballast, but an electronic ballast runs some of the more modern versions of this type of light. There are two different types of circline bulbs, the older style which is generally a T9 designation and the newer form which is T5. The T9 is a little over one inch in diameter, and the T5 is of an inch in diameter. These are easy to identify based on this tube diameter as well as the ballast that it operates on.

Light fixture types and energy savings.
Many types of light fixtures utilize this back before the modern version of compact fluorescent light bulbs. Most often this was used in low-profile drum light fixtures of which we still sell today with this type of lamp used. A lot of people like it because it’s a beautiful circle of light and it gave off a very even light as well. With the advent of today’s LED, some of that’s changed, and people are looking for more efficient ways to light with this kind of fixture. And speaking of LED, there are many ways to upgrade your existing circline light fixtures with a simple retrofit that will make it more energy-efficient. For those of you who want to save the most money possible, there’s never been a better time to take a look at doing an upgrade. For simple drum light or mushroom light fixtures, sometimes it’s just as inexpensive to change the whole fixture out rather than doing some lighting retrofit. If you’re curious about which way is best to go, make sure you download our free energy-saving calculation spreadsheet that’s on the left-hand column of our website. It will tell you how much you can save based on your current lighting system to one of the new types of lights you buy from us. All you have to do is put in some relevant data of what you have now, the kilowatt cost and the hours you use it. And you can compare it to anything you see on our website. It will tell you how long it will take to pay back your investment through energy savings. It will also give you a simple look at your energy consumption right now when it comes to lighting.

Color designations for circline lamps.
Color temperature is measured by a couple of different ways when it comes to this type of light bulb. The older method was with the colors lights like warm white, cool white or daylight. That usually was the identification for something that was a T9 style of light bulb. The bulb is the one that operates on a magnetic ballast, and many people liked the colors they were getting from that. Over a decade ago, the introduction of T5 circline introduced a new set of color temperature identification. You would see everything from 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4100K, 5000K and even 6500K for almost any of the lamps that were available. We still sell these, and it’s much easier to identify what you have although they can vary slightly from one brand to another. Some of the connections are a little bit different from the Philips brand to the Sylvania brand. So often it’s critical to get the right brand and manufacturer of that type of T5 bulb.

What do you have?
If you’re unsure as to which one you have, you can always give us a call or email us with any of the pertinent information. You can also send us pictures of the light bulb that you’re trying to replace, and we can quickly identify it from that alone. It’s easy for us to recognize it and it’s often a little tricky for people who are unfamiliar with this style of lamp to get it right. It’s a little bit cryptic as to how they identify it and there, are some imported brands that don’t adhere to any US standards. We should mention that there are imported bulbs that were different from anything that was standardized. This causes a problem because they often don’t fit in the light fixture or it doesn’t work on the ballast that you have. It’s a problem, and if you have something that seems unusual and you can’t find it anywhere, you might have to ask yourself the question as to whether it is something that was imported. If you had purchased that type of light fixture in a big box local store, that could happen quite often. There are sometimes these big stores will import something, and it will have, no replacement lamp for it. They won’t even sell the replacement bulb themselves to support the product. That’s not something you get with us, when you buy a light fixture from us regardless of the light source, we can always get you replacement parts for it whether it’s a bulb or some LED array. It’s something to be aware of when you’re purchasing light fixtures, it’s not a very good idea to buy them from a big box retailer, and it’s not just because you can’t get a bulb. A lot of times it’s a retail item, and it’s made from cheap components, made to be sold at a cheap price and probably something that’s not going to last very long. That’s why we carry only quality products, and although they may cost a little bit more, they will save you money in the long run.

We have the ballasts too.
If you’re looking for ballast for either the T9 or the T5 circline bulbs, we have those as well, and as mentioned earlier the T9 are typically a magnetic ballast, and the T5 are an electronic ballast. If you’re unsure as to which ballast you may need for the lamp that you have, you can email us the information off your existing ballast that you’re trying to replace. You can also take a picture and send it to us either by text or email, and we can take a look at it and accurately identify it and let you know which one you have. It’s easy for us, and we do have cross-references to all types of ballasts, and we want to make sure you get the right one because these are not interchangeable lamps. The ballasts only run one type of lamp or group of lamps, and that is designated on the ballast itself. The electronic ballast can run different kinds of bulbs typically, but it’s good to make sure that you have the right one for the lamp you are trying to operate.
