Protected Metal Halide Light Bulbs
Protected metal halide light bulbs are made for open fixtures and have a tubular piece of glass around the arc tube to prevent glass breakage. These are typically called an MP metal halide such as MP100 or MP175 as an example. They're often used in fixtures where they might be in close proximity to public areas. These lamps can be typically burned in almost any position. Be aware that these metal halides must be run with a correct ballast and fixture that is matched for the wattage. These work in all kinds of fixtures that have no covering or are completely open.
