MR16 GU10 halogen light bulbs with the convenience of standard 120 volt rating.

MR16 lamps were always a low voltage lamp until recently when some versions of 120 volt came onto the market.  Now there are a couple of different bases but the one that's emerging as the preferred type is the MR16 GU10 halogen light bulbs.  The GU10 halogen has a special base which is a twist lock base.  It's better than just a push-in pin, because the socket base makes a more positive connection without coming loose. This does away with the need for a low voltage transformer and offers some design flexibility as a result.  These lamps are very small, only 2 inches at the opening of the reflector, but they produce a lot of light and have great beam control.  That's why they been the choice of many retailers using them in their stores to highlight product better than anything that's on the market today.

MR16 lamps come in a variety of voltages like this 120 volt but the most common is the 12 volt used in track lighting in homes and in retail stores. Many times when people speak of MR16 lamps they assume that they are always a 12 volt version. now they come in many different voltages including 24 volt and 120 volt with a variety of bases too. Some people like the variations of voltages so that they can use line voltage if they want to add not have to change the entire electrical scheme to accommodate a low voltage system.  That's why many manufacturers are also providing new MR16 GU10 halogen light bulbs for use in those kind of systems also.

It can be a little confusing as there are so many different variations of these lamps, but MR16 bulbs are very distinct between the different types.  Always remember the things that matter the most are the wattage, voltage, the beam spread and the pin configuration.  If you know these things then you can determine easily which one that you have right now.  All of them come with a dichroic coating which allows for better light output and heat that goes out the back of the lamp. Many people think that MR16 halogen bulbs can only be used indoors.  They can be used outdoors as well and are in many landscape lighting situations where the fixture has adequate sealing.  The precise beams of these lamps make it an ideal choice for getting the light where you need it in uplighting and general highlighting. Many times you think that you might have a regular floodlight in a landscape fixture, you might have an MR16 lamp as part of the configuration.
